Life On the Inside
A former "guest" of the Lucas County Jail system said that it's very likely an inmate could be spending their time with the "dregs of society." This could mean sharing space with someone who is going through a painful drug or alcohol withdraw. That is not going to be pleasant for anyone. It can also cause tempers to flare up on occasion.
The Lucas County Jail can be found in downtown Toledo can currently houses up to 346 inmates. No matter what they've been convicted of, each of those inmates is given the opportunity to participate in a variety of self-improvement programs such as drug and alcohol treatment, religious services, continuing education and general counseling.
There are twenty different cell blocks on five floors. Guard stations are situated in the middle of each unit. Even though there are cameras everywhere, it still can take up to 30 seconds for guards to respond to a fight or other serious incident.
To keep in shape, inmates can play basketball on a half court or walk the track several times. There are cards, games, TV and books made available.
Good Behavior Policy
Often, good behavior reductions at the Lucas County Jail depend a lot on the status of the jail population. The more crowded, the easier it will be for non-violent offenders to get out early; sometimes up to half of their sentence could be reduced. But even one fight or infraction could set the clock back to zero.
Visit and Telephone Policy
To have a visit with an inmate at Lucas County Jail, you need to already be on the approved visitor's list which as been set up by the inmate. You will then have to make a specific appointment. You can't just show up at the jail and think you can have a visit.
Note that a complete warrant check will be performed on each visit before the appointment. Visitors also have to dress appropriately which means no "sexually suggestive clothing."
For outgoing phone calls, inmates are given access to telephones on each of the cell blocks but the wait is usually long even with a 30 minute time limit.
